Michael Kassner is Director of Research at the Office of Naval Research. He is
on leave from the University of Southern California, where he is Professor of Materials
Science, and served as the chair of the Department of Mechanical and
AerospaceEngineering during 2003-2009. Prior to joining USC, he was Northwest
