Scholarships for Science Students
Scholarships for science students are available from three Washington State University sources:
- Washington State University Scholarship Services,
- The College of Sciences Dean’s Office,
- The department or school that is home to your major
The College of Sciences offers scholarships to undergraduates (as well as fellowships to graduate students). Awards of scholarships follow the wishes of the donors and, thus, student eligibility varies from fund to fund. In addition to named or memorial scholarships, donated general funds are also used to provide scholarships for undergraduates. An explanation of each of these scholarships can be found at the Undergraduate Scholarship Award Information page. Application inquiries should be directed to WSU Scholarship Services, the Dean’s Office, and to the department in which you are a declared major.
WSU Scholarship Services manages general scholarships and financial aid programs. Applications for WSU Academic Scholarships are available through WSU Scholarship Services and online. Distinguished Presidential Scholarships, room fee waivers, and other support are possibilities for well-prepared students. Students are encouraged to fill out this application every year.
Special recruitment scholarships may be offered to well-prepared enrolling freshmen interested in sciences or mathematics. These scholarships are awarded through the College of Sciences Dean's Office. Dean's awards can be made for up to two academic years so long as the student remains a science or math major and shows adequate coursework progress. Some scholarships are also available for transfer students. Freshman and new transfer students may apply for these scholarships by filling out the applications for WSU Academic Scholarships. To be eligible for a scholarship in the College of Sciences you must indicate an interest in an intended major offered by the College of Sciences when you fill out that application. Note that this is the same application that is used for the general university scholarships. Outstanding students may be awarded scholarships from the university as well as the College of Sciences.
After students officially certify in a major in the College of Sciences, they become eligible for additional scholarships, including departmental scholarships (Physics, Biology, Chemistry, etc.) Pre-health (Pre-Med, Pre-Dent, Pre-Vet, etc.) scholarships, and Dean's office scholarships. To be eligible for these scholarships students should fill out the College of Sciences Undergraduate Scholarship Application. Transfer students who plan on certifying a major in the College of Sciences upon entering WSU are eligible to fill out this application. However, transfer students should contact the department in which they are certifying by letter. In the letter, the student should indicate that they have filled out and submitted the College of Sciences application and that they intend to certify in the major upon entering WSU. Students who fill out the College of Sciences Undergraduate Scholarship application are also encouraged to continue to fill out the application for WSU scholarships.
