Scholarships for Undergraduates

If you wish to apply for a Washington State University College of Sciences undergraduate scholarship, click here if you are an incoming freshman or here if you are a returning student.

After receiving your application, the College of Sciences Scholarship Committee will determine your eligibility for one or more of the following scholarships. Students do not apply for a specific scholarship. The determination of which scholarship may be awarded to a specific student is made by the Scholarship Committee when it reviews your application. The scholarships are listed here for your information only.

 

College of Sciences Undergraduate Scholarships


Ellen Hauge Abelson Endowed Scholarship
Established through a bequest in 2004 by Dr. Philip Abelson (1913-2004) in memory of his mother, Ellen Hauge Abelson. Ellen and Olaf Abelson enrolled at WSU in 1905 after building a house where the Fulmer chemistry building now stands. Science Hall was renamed in 2002 to honor the Abelson family.

 

Boeing Endowed Scholarship for Underrepresented Undergraduate Students in Science
Created by The Boeing Company to provide opportunities for students traditionally underrepresented groups in science. Such groups include those of varying ages, genders, races, national origins, talents, etc. and those from underrepresented populations and/or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

 

Boeing Outstanding Undergraduate Students in Science
Created by The Boeing Company to provide opportunities for students in science.


Boeing Scholars in Science
A two-year program created by The Boeing Company, for undergraduates in the College of Sciences. This program provides a collaborative research opportunity with Boeing Scholars from the Colleges of Business and Engineering.

 

The Dale and Olive Mae Dibble Liberty Bell High School Scholarship
Established by Dale and Olive Mae Dibble for graduates of Liberty Bell High School in Winthrop, WA who attend Washington State University and major in the College of Sciences. Dale graduated from Winthrop High School (now Liberty Bell High School) in 1939 and received his BS from “WSC” in 1939.

 

Greenwood Family Sciences Endowed Scholarship
Created by Marsha Greenwood in memory of her husband William (1932 – 1998) and in honor of their daughter Roberta. William was a pre-med student at WSU who earned his BS in zoology in 1954. Roberta earned a BS in biology from WSU in 1988.

 


Florence George Handy Endowed Scholarship
Established by Florence Handy Forst in memory of her mother Florence (1914-2000) who was a strong supporter of education for women all of her life.

 

Catherine Melissa Loomis Scholarship
Charles (1921-1998) and Betty Loomis, longtime WSU alumni, established this scholarship in memory of their daughter Catherine, a 1969 home economics graduate of WSU.

 

Dr. Edward R. Meyer Scholarship
Dr. Edward R. Meyer graduated from WSU in 1938 with a PhC and BS in Pharmacy and established this scholarship to promote research and public service opportunities for students in the sciences.

 

Henry J. Neusse Endowed Scholarship
Established by Colonel Henry Neusse (1905 -1994). Henry earned his B.S. in General Studies in 1931. He served in the Army Air Corps Reserves until his retirement in 1958.

 

William J. Shelton Scholarship
Established in 1988 by William Shelton. A descendant of early settlers in the Washington Territory, Bill earned a BS (1931) and an MS (1933) in chemistry from “WSC”. He had a 50 year career in the paper industry. In his experiences, both as a student at Washington State and as an executive in industry, Bill Shelton came to appreciate the important influence and support needed by promising students in the sciences.

 

Howard and Shirley Strobel Scholarship
This scholarship was established through a bequest by Howard and Shirley Strobel in 1992. Howard graduated from WSU in 1942 with a BS in chemistry. He went on to work on the Manhattan Project and then received his PhD from Brown University. During his 47-year tenure as a professor of chemistry at Duke University, he served as academic dean and authored three editions of chemistry textbooks.

 

J. Herman and Jean Kaye Swartz Memorial Scholarship/ Fellowship Fund
J. Herman Swartz (1915-1996) earned his BS (1938) and MS (1939) in Bacteriology from “WSC”. His wife, Jean Swartz, established this fund in 1997 in memory of her husband. Herman received a $400 scholarship that changed his life. He believed that any student who wants an education should get that chance – and that the rest of us should help.

 

Kate B. Webster Endowment Fund
(Also awarded by the Physics and Astronomy, Earth and Environmental Science, and Health Sciences areas.)

Kate established this fund in 1999 to support women studying and doing research in science areas housed in the Kate B. Webster Physical Sciences Building. The building was named for Kate in 1994 in recognition of her 20 years of service as a WSU Regent and her commitment to science education.

 

The Bill Wiley Opportunity Scholarship
Established by employees of Battelle to honor Bill Wiley (1932-1996) as Senior Vice President for Science and Technology Policy at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Bill received his PhD 1965, in Bacteriology at WSU. He was known as one of the leading supporters of science and education in Washington state.

 

Shirley Williamson Endowed Memorial Science Scholarship
Shirley Williamson (1951-2004) received her BS in public health and bacteriology from WSU in 1973. She worked for Hollister-Stier Laboratories for 28 years. Her friends and co-workers at Hollister-Stier established this scholarship in her memory.

School of Biological Sciences


Herbert L. Eastlick Scholarship
(See also Health Sciences)

Created by friends and family in honor of Herbert L. Eastlick (1908-2002) WSU Professor of Zoology. For 33 years Dr. Eastlick was dedicated to his teaching and to his students. He prepared them for professional careers in medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine. Both Herbert and his wife, Dr. Margaret “Peg” Eastlick were respected for their research and dedication to their students.

 

Hugh Duncan Fraser Memorial Endowment
Established by Lucian (1934-2001) and Nancy Fraser in memory of their son Hugh.

 

Student Research Endowment in Biology
The School of Biological Sciences created this endowment in 2000 to provide more research opportunities for students studying biology.

 

Student Research Endowment in Zoology
The Department of Zoology created this endowment in 1997 from a donation from the estate of Charles and June Campbell. Charles received his BS in Zoology at WSU in 1938.

 

George Van Vleet, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1984 by the family of George Van Vleet.

Department of Chemistry


Art and Helen Brunstad Endowed Scholarship in Chemistry
Originally established in 1992 by Art (1908-2002) and Helen (1913-1997) to recognize the long association of the Brunstads with Washington State University’s academic areas throughout three generations. Art received is BS and MS (1931-1933) in Chemistry. “WSU really improved my life,” said Art. “I came here in the fall of 1926. It’s been pretty much a love affair (with WSU) ever since.”

 

Beverly Casebier Memorial Scholarship in Chemistry
Established in 1991 by her husband Ronald and family. Bev never attended WSU but she was a Cougar through and through. As a wife, mother and friend to many, she was much loved.

 

Ron Casebier Chemistry Scholarship Endowment
Established in 2003 by Ron’s children. It is a tribute to the love, dedication, and example that Ron has given to his sons, his coworkers, and his community. Ron Casebier is an excellent example of what WSU is and aspires to be: “First Class, Face to Face.”

 

Julian Culbertson Memorial Endowment
Established by distinguished scientist and former student, Philip H. Abelson, to honor the outstanding teaching career of Julian (1895-1986). Professor Culbertson was a noted teacher, researcher and Chair of the Department of Chemistry. His teaching was truly a labor of love and the welfare of each student of his was of highest priority.

 

Dr. Edwin J. Hart Chemistry Scholarship Fund
Professor Hart (1910-1995) earned both his BS and MS in Chemistry from WSU (1931-1933). .As an internationally renowned researcher in aqueous radiation chemistry, Edwin discovered his interest in science as a student at WSU in the late 1920s. He and his wife, Rozella, expressed their appreciation by establishing this scholarship for undergraduate chemistry students.

 

McFadden/Yount Undergraduate Scholarship in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology
(See also Molecular Biosciences)

Bruce McFadden and Ralph Yount established this scholarship in 2003 as a reflection of their research efforts and the development of biochemistry at Washington State University. As former chairs and professors in the in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry they taught hundreds of students and wanted to support them through scholarships.

 

The Harvey K. and Clarissa Murer Memorial Scholarship (formerly The Harvey K. Murer Memorial Scholarship)
Established in 1994 in honor of Professor Harvey Murer, a research faculty member in chemistry who received a B.S. in agricultural chemistry in 1933 at WSU. He was the Director of Research at the General Foods Research at the General Foods Research Center from 1940 until his death in an auto accident in 1960.

 

Phi Lambda Upsilon Chi Chapter Scholarship
The Department of Chemistry established this scholarship in 1994 for students studying chemistry.

 

Ellen and William Shelton Endowed Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was created in 1994 by Ellen (1914-2005) as a bequest of William (1909-1992) who earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees (1931-34) in Chemistry from WSU. He spent his entire career in the pulp and paper chemical business. Ellen grew up in the midwest and was an alumna from Purdue University.

 

Gardner Stacy Research Endowment Fund
Professor Stacy (1921-1995) was a faculty member in the Chemistry Department. This fund was initiated by George R. Pettit, a former student, to perpetuate Professor Stacy’s research and honor him as a distinguished scholar, teacher, and outstanding contributor to Washington State University.

 

C. C. Todd Memorial Scholarship
To perpetuate the memory of Clare C. Todd, his wife and family established this scholarship in 1962. Dean Todd devoted 38 years of his lifetime to WSU as Professor, Department Chairman of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Sciences. Todd Hall was dedicated in 1947 in his honor.

 

 

School of Earth and Environmental Science


Charles D. Campbell Endowment
This fund was established in 1989 by the geology department to honor Professor Charles D. Campbell (1905-1989), former chair. He retired from WSU in 1971 after 37 years of service.

James W. Crosby Memorial Scholarship/Fellowship
Professor James W. Crosby served as a faculty member at WSU for 30 years until his death in 1984. He was a dedicated educator and outstanding researcher in geology. He was responsible for initiating the geological engineering program at WSU.

Harold E. Culver Memorial Scholarship
Dr. Harold E. Culver served as professor and head of the geology department at WSU from 1925-1950. His wife, Joan Culver, established this fund in 1983 to commemorate the centennial of his birth. At the time of his death in 1970, his students established a memorial study collection of geological samples which are housed in the Culver Museum on the first floor of Webster Physical Sciences Building.

Oscar and Muriel Holloway Ferrians Endowment in Geology
This fund was established by Oscar J. Ferrians, Jr. in 1992 to provide support for students studying in the areas of geology, foreign languages and education. Both Oscar and his wife, Muriel, graduated from WSU. He was a career geologist with the US Geological Survey and is recognized as worldwide expert on permafrost.

Myron and Marie Huckle Geology Scholarship
This fund was established in 1994 by friends and family to honor Myron and Marie Huckle. Myron was a 1927 mechanical engineering graduate and an inveterate rock hound and amateur geologist.

Lyle and Lela “Millie” Jacklin Geology Scholarship
This fund was established by Lyle and Lela Jacklin as an expression of their lifelong interest in geology and in the collection, study, and preparation of gem stone materials. The Jacklins both graduated from Washington State University in 1935.

Gale C. Knutsen Memorial Undergraduate Scholarship in the Department of Geology
This fund was created by his wife, Debbie Knutsen, and others in Gale’s memory. Gale (1952-1996) received his BS (1976) and MS (1979) in geology at WSU. His early work led to his managing the exploration and development of the world-class Rain Gold Deposit.

Lorry and Judy McCroskey Endowment Fund
Lorry McCroskey (1927-2001) and Judy wanted to “make a difference” for the environment by helping environmental science and regional planning students graduate from WSU. They established this fund in 1990. Lorry attended WSU in the class of 1952. Judy McCroskey is a 1961 alumna of the University of Idaho.

Reynolds-Biersner Scholarship Endowment in Geology
This fund was created by E. Donald and Jane (Reynolds) Biersner in 1999 in memory of Jane’s mother, Anne Reynolds. It is directed to the areas of study pursued by the Biersner children. It also includes athletics, an area Don and Jane have supported and enjoyed for years. The Biersners have fond feelings for WSU and especially appreciate the quality undergraduate experience WSU provides.

Rockie Family Scholarship
This fund was established in 1978 to recognize the long association of the Rockie family as alumni and friends of Washington State University.

Mel, Johanna and Sammi Schroeder Scholarship in Geology
Created by Mel and Johanna Schroeder in 2006. Mel received his BS in geology in 1942 and his PhD in 1953 from WSU. He became a professor of geology at Texas A&M and taught there until his retirement in 2001. Mel credits his belief in hard work and dedication that helped him through college and he wants to help promising students with the same need and determination to succeed.

Kate B. Webster Endowment Fund

Herbert L. Eastlick Scholarship

Arnold and Julia Greenwell Memorial Scholarship in Sciences
Established in 1976 by Arnold and Julia Greenwell from their estates upon their deaths. Mr. and Mrs. Greenwell were long-time residents of the Pullman area. They farmed land south of the city for many years.

 

Bernice I. Jordan Memorial Scholarship in Pre-Medicine
Bernice Cornehl-Jordan was a 1929 WSU alumna of Home Economics. She was a Home Economics teacher and dietician, retiring in 1964.

 

John Allen Lewis Memorial Scholarship
John Lewis graduated received his BS in Zoology from WSU in 1945. He went on to dental school and practiced in the Tacoma, WA area until his death. This scholarship was created in 1982 by his mother, Beryl Flood Lewis, WSU class f 1908.

 

Dr. Edward R. Meyer Scholarship in Premedicine
Dr. Edward R. Meyer attended WSU for Pharmacy/Pre-Medical studies. He received his PhC and BS in Pharmacy degrees from WSU in 1938. He began general practice in medicine in 1946 and was the only physician in McCleary, WA until 1959.

 

Dr. Richard E. Morton Pre-Medicine Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 1973 in memory of Dr. Richard E. Morton. Dr. Morton served as physician for WSU athletics from 1954 to 1971 and was interested in sports medicine. He maintained a general family practice at Pullman for more than three decades, thus associating himself with many students, faculty and friends of the University.

 

Shauna Rae and Charles M Weatherby Endowed Scholarship Fund
Charles and Shauna Rae created this fund in 1995 to assist underserved minorities pursuing careers in health related fields, particularly medicine and nursing. Shauna Rae attended WSU 1973-75 and transferred to UW to receive her MS in Public Health. She had a career in Women’s Health and Charles earned his BS in Zoology in 1974 at WSU. After graduating from UW Medical School, Charles went on to a career as a family practitioner. Charles and Shauna became quite concerned about the lack of minorities in the health related fields. It is their hope that students that they have helped would do likewise as they continue with their medical and nursing careers.

 

Kate B. Webster Endowment Fund

Claude H. Weitz Endowed Premedical Scholarship
This scholarship was created by Dr. Weitz’s family in honor of Claude (1917-2001) who loved to practice medicine. Claude earned his BS in Zoology (Premedical Program) in 1940-42 from WSU. Claude had three sons, Tom, Bill, and Bruce, all of whom graduated from WSU. Dr. Weitz practiced medicine in Pullman for 32 years. He was beloved and well-respected by all the patients and physicians who knew him.

 

Department of Mathematics


Bell Freshman Mathematics Scholarship Award
Douglas and Michele Bell are both Washington State University alumni. Doug received his BA in 1970 with distinction, and a Masters degree in 1975. This fund was established to reward freshmen with superior academic records. Doug received $100 scholarship as a WSU senior and it made a “Big” difference.

 

Paul and Marjorie Clement Memorial Freshman Mathematics Scholarship
This scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Professor Paul Clement, BA 1928 Math, MS 1940 Physics a long-time member of the Mathematics faculty at Washington State University and his wife, Marjorie BA 1940 Math, who served at WSU for many years as a librarian.

 

Sidney G. Hacker Mathematics Scholarship Fund
Sidney Guy Hacker (1908-1983) was a former chair of the Department of Mathematics for many years at Washington State University. He left a lasting legacy of warmth, humor, humanity and honesty. He believed that a teacher should also be a gentleman.

 

Marianne Hawley Fessler Endowment in Mathematics
Marianne Hawley Fessler earned her BA in 1934 from Washington State College. Mrs. Fessler was an accomplished educator and world traveler.

 

Knebelman Prize in Mathematics
Established in 1961 by colleagues and friends to honor Professor Morris Samuel Knebelman at the time of his retirement from WSU. Dr. Knebelman (1891-1972) came to WSU in 1938. For the next 23 years, he served terms as chair of the Department of Mathematics as well as associate dean of the College of Sciences. Students recognized Professor Knebelman as a superlative scholar and teacher.

 

J. Russell and Mildred H. Vatnsdal Memorial Scholarship
Originally established in 1967 by Mildred (1902-1996) and their daughter Mary Cowan in memory of John Russell. John earned his MA in 1930 in Mathematics. He was a gifted teacher for 40 years and a source of kind, constructive advice for younger faculty members. Mildred joined the math faculty in 1930. As a tribute to both her parents and their connection with the Math Department, Mary Vatnsdal Cowan added Mildred’s name to the original J. Russell Vatnsdal Memorial Scholarship.

 

 

School of Molecular Biosciences


Melva Jean Kinch Breffeilh Memorial Scholarship
Melva’s family created this scholarship in her memory. As a young student, “Mel” (1921-1996) graduated from WSU in 1943 and became a medical technologist. She wanted to do something different; therefore she chose the field of science in which to pursue her degree. Her laboratory experiences in Saudi Arabia during WW II and Venezuela helped her to fulfill this dream.

 

Alice L. Diers Bacteriology Enrichment Fund
Alice (1911-2000) received her BS in 1931 from WSU in Bacteriology. Growing up on a Palouse wheat farm, Alice’s mother was determined to send her to college. Alice’s independent spirit served her well as she worked in pathological labs across the Northwest, including Alaska; where she met her husband William. Alice established this fund in 1983 to foster the quality of education and research within the microbiology degree program.

 

Alice Lloyd Diers and William E. Diers Microbiology Student Endowment
This scholarship was created by Bill Retelle in 2001, as a memorial to his dear friends, Alice (1911-2000) and William Diers (1910-1969). Bill and William were fishing buddies and lifelong friends. After William’s death in 1969, Bill continued to care for his friend Alice until her death in 2000.

 

Elizabeth R. Hall Endowment Scholarship
Elizabeth’s many friends, colleagues, and former students established this fund in 1972 as a memorial to her.  Dr. Hall (1914-2001), a member of the WSU faculty from 1944 to 1976, was a researcher and instructor in bacteriology and public health for 32 years. She was a noted teacher and received the Carski Foundation Distinguished Teaching Award from the American Society of Microbiology in 1976.

 

McFadden/Yount Undergraduate Scholarship in Biochemistry and Chemical Biology

Bruce McFadden and Ralph Yount established this scholarship in 2003 as a reflection of their research efforts and the development of biochemistry at Washington State University. As former chairs and professors in the in the Departments of Chemistry and Biochemistry they taught hundreds of students and wanted to support them through scholarships.

 

Herbert M. Nakata Microbiology Fund
This fund was established in 1993 by the Department of Microbiology to honor Herbert M. Nakata, former chair. As Professor Emeritus, Dr. Nakata remains active in the College of Sciences.

Department of Physics and Astronomy


Paul A. Anderson Prize Fund
Professor Anderson (1897-1990) was Chair of the Department of Physics for thirty years. He initiated a program of research on electronic work functions at WSU, which led to the establishment of a number of work function values.

 

Paul A. Bender Physics Endowed Scholarship
Established by Dian Bender, in memory of her husband, Paul A. Bender (1931-1989) professor of physics from 1960-1989. His research focus was in Geophysics, where he pioneered the use of electron spin resonance for characterizing igneous rocks.

 

Ed and Virginia Donaldson Surface Science Scholarship
This fund was established to honor professor emeritus Edward Donaldson and his wife, Virginia. As chair of the Department of Physics, Dr. Donaldson contributed to the fields of vacuum, surface, and fracture sciences.

 

Kate B. Webster Endowment Fund

Kate established this fund in 1999 to support women studying and doing research in science areas housed in the Kate B. Webster Physical Sciences Building. NASA Space Grant Scholarships for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
This grant has been created to provide scholarships for promising students in astronomy, engineering, mathematics, or other sciences that show a strong interest in space science or pursuing a space science career.  Applications are due December 22, 2008 for the Spring 2009 semester.  For more information, go to http://www.wsgc.wsu.edu
